An Idea

When I was younger I had a gardening job working at someones house doing the lawn and weeding - I got confused between the plants that should be avoided and the weeds.  Needless to say my job did not last long and there ended my interest in gardening - however, I have to say it was just another of my money making schemes.

Roll the clock forward 35 years and I now thinking of getting my hands dirty again - so to speak. I live in an apartment aprox 80 feet up from ground level - there is not garden but I do have a small balcony..

I not done anything with the balcony as you can see apart from 2 chairs it's a free space. I had not even contemplated window boxes or plants of any kind so this is a bit of a shock to me. The idea came from watching TV - I think it was the Chelsea Flower Show and listening to the presenters chat about rock gardens. It seems they are well suited to troughs and therefore good on balconies and need little maintenance - the seed was planted.
I take photos in my spare time and do yearly visits to Kew Gardens in South West London. Whilst looking through the Alpine section I though these really are beautiful flowers and foliage too - maybe I could give this a go? What next?  Well, Google is your friend in these instances, so I did lots of research and found plenty of information of different opinions that could be blended into one.
So this is where the idea came from and this blog will follow me through my trials and tribulations of being a novice gardener in the city.
