The first plan

So a few days have past and I have decided to start a plan so I can start my own rock garden. The first thing I have done is mapped out my balcony to make things easier..

Although I used Illustrator to make my plan - you can just as well use a program like Excel, Visio or even Paint to draw some boxes and put the dimensions next to them. So why have I done this?

  • So that when I buy pots / troughs I know they will fit.
  • I can access the file anywhere so I know what I am working with.
  • I can make the plans on them so I know which is where.
I am trying to keep my costs as low as possible and found some wall mounted half pots in the pound shop the other day. I am currently painting these so they blend in, they are to go on the East Divider. All rock plants need good drainage so these pots all need some holes drilling in the bases. I've also order 2 troughs that should fit over the railing which are 60 cms long each..  picture follows -

Safety is a large thought in my mind with something hanging from the balcony so with the above trough I should not have anything to worry about.  However, I am in the testing stage so if they are not adequate I will be sending them back... Cost - £15 each.

After a lot of internet reading I have gained knowledge of how to plant alpines and other rock fauna. So I have bought a bag of gravel which only cost £1.50 as the bag was split and a bag of compost - John Innes No3 which I am told is a good choice - £2..50. The only thing needs now is larger stones / rocks for decoration and I'm thinking of picking these up soon - not sure where to get them yet...
